Have I Sinned?

Me, you, the people in church, your sweet old neighbor, all of us have sinned! Sin comes from within and defiles a person. Many times, sin can be seen as a damper to a very 'fun' and eventful life. To most people's surprise, Christians don't only enjoy a good game of checkers on the weekends. Sin is what separates us from God and His kingdom of eternity, and leads to an unsatisfactory life here on Earth. Let's take a look at what the Bible defines as sin for us, and the consequences that follow.

Romans 3:23

"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"

Mark 7:20-23

"He went on: 'What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person's heart, that evil thoughts come-- sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.'"

Galatians 5:19-21

"The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery; idolatry, and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Ephesians 5:3-7

"But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person- such a person is an idolater- has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them."

2 Timothy 3:1-5

"But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people."

Romans 6:23

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

James 4:17

"If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them."

Isaiah 59:1-2

"Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear."

What can I do about it?

Sin is humanity's greatest problem. In Ephesians 5, God tells us that there must not be even a hint of immorality, greed, or impurity-- He is expecting a radical break from the world; a proper 180 degree turn! Since everyone sins, our greatest need is forgiveness. Figure out how mankind might obtain forgiveness and a seat in God's kingdom in the next study about repentance and the importance of having a repentant heart.
